All spring forces and heights are the same as the original Nissan retainer. Formula to determine approximate lash pad thickness required: Original lash pad thickness for the stock U20 cams = .078. Re-ground cams have a reduced base circle. Some camshafts have a base circle that is very reduced. The important thing to remember from this is to check each re-ground camshaft to get the proper lash pad thickness required. We can help you choose the correct lash pad to get you in the ball park. Other factors that will effect what size lash pad to use are related to the actual rocker arms being used. Not all rocker arms are made exactly the same and can vary from rocker arm to rocker arm. Depth of the valve seats, installed height of the valves can also effect what size lash pad should be used to obtain the correct "wipe area" on the rocker arm and the correct "lift value at the valve". Original factory rocker arms were one piece rocker arms that had a flash chrome surface over the casting that would wear off and the cam lobes, over time, would gall the rocker arm pad surface. That is why Nissan later made two piece rockers to replace the one piece. One piece rocker arms that are merely ground/not coated will not last as long as coated ones. An identical master of the profile was made from an original Nissan B cam (SEE PHOTO). The exclusive master was contracted so as to grind U20 cam cores to the identical Solex B specification. The most significant difference between the Solex B and the Solex C camshafts are mainly in the duration of the camshafts, the B being slightly less. The lift value is slightly less than the C profile as well. Since Nissan supplied this camshaft in their Motorsports catalog its intended use was to be with the U20 Solex 4 barrel induction kit that was in production at the time, but can also be used with the SU carbureted version. I have personal experience with this camshaft and it is quite different than the Solex C cam. It is not a full race cam and is completely acceptable for use on the street. These inserts were reverse engineered to screw into the ports in the head where the air injectors were installed as smog equipment. They have the exact thread and contour of the injectors and fill the entire cavity; both the threaded portion and the smooth bore. This completely eliminates that annoying �chirping� sound caused by engine exhaust passing over the tube, which creates a resonant chamber (like a badly played flute).GENERIC ALLEN HEAD SHORT PLUGS WITH NO EXTENSION WILL NOT SOLVE THE CHIRPING ISSUE. Works great with re-ground cams with reduced base circles, to correct the geometry between the rocker arm and the camshaft lobe. Selecting the correct thickness allows one to match the theoretical lift on paper with the actual dial indicated lift during mock up and assembly. Since there are no L-series lash pads under .150 thick available these lash pads will work with camshafts that require thicknesses less than .150 in order to obtain the correct wipe area, lift etc. of the cam you are using. A tensioner that sticks out to far will have to fill each time, thus moving from the relaxed position to the fully, extended hydraulic position, each time the engine starts, with the result of a rattling chain slapping against the guide rails and sprockets. Great little kit for those of you that can't afford new pieces or have worn pieces or an overly planed cylinder head resulting in the tensioner shoe sticking way out. Directions: Start and run the engine until the oil gauge shows pressure, usually about 15 seconds to 30 seconds. The tensioner is last in line to receive oil pressure. Remove the valve cover and the front access cover. The upper tensioner should be tight against the chain and the chain should be tight on the other side of the cam sprocket. Measure the distance between the back of the shoe and the front of the cast tensioner housing and take note of the distance. Take one of the zip ties and work it through the front of tensioner and loop around the cast housing. Pull and tighten the zip tie as tight as you can make it. Put a rag underneath the tensioner area to keep the bolts from falling down into the engine. Loosen the two bolts and extract the tensioner. Hold the tensioner and cut the zip tie and remove the shoe. Add the washers included in the kit to make up the distance you measured. Put the other zip tie around the assembly and tighten. Reassemble the tensioner/spring, with the gasket supplied, into the engine and tighten down the bolts. Cut the zip tie and assemble the access plate with the new gasket. |

Before removing the tensioner, run the car to make sure that the tensioner is at maximum tension and has taken up the slack. Measure the distance from the back of the shoe to the body of the tensioner. This is the amount you will need to keep the chain tight. Now remove the tensioner. Simply slide the tie strip through and around the body of the tensioner and close the shoe to the body. Put something under neath the body when removing the bolts so you don't lose anything down into the motor. After adding the shims repeat the process with the other tie strip to re-install the tensioner This kit helps the death rattle. 06/29/17 |
